I was at my local auto parts store a few months ago and was talking to the guys there about those 'thread trees' that you see at ACE hardware, Lowes, and home depot. Those things that you can try threads on until you find the one.Well, low and behold, out from the back room came one of these tools. This one came from oriellys and cost about $25.oo. (You can find crappy ones on EBAY as well.) Whats nice about this on is the partability and ease of use of the tool. It has both male and female threads, and each piece is stamped with it's thread size and pitch. Just something to keep in mind when searching for tools to buy...
